As usual, you know more about my subjects than I do!

As for the dramatic path, I'm sure there's quite the story. . .

Nicely done Gregoire. That country is interesting , because its where, the flat tame farmland begins to twist and turn and look more like the wild, rocky mountainous West. The Snake River in itself is fascinating to learn about, from water rights and irrigation, to fabulous whitewater and wildlife. I am curious about how that River cut such a dramatic path.
My only experience on the Snake River was a float trip near Teton Nat'l Park, but it was awesome.

I do not remember a lot about Igloo, So Dakota, but here goes: About 1951 our family moved here from Ipswich S D. that would put me in about the 2nd or 3rd grade. My sister Lynn Anne was born in Igloo, '51 Oct 17. My father was in security. I was in the Cub & Boy Scouts also the NRA. My sister Betty was a year younger than me and could always score better on targets than me. This was and is still a sore spot with me. I remember sledding down the long hills and trying to stop before we slid across the road. We were told to stay off the road, not much traffic? Saturdays we would go to the post movies and for about 6 weeks out of the year we would go swimming. We didn't care how cold the water was. We went to school in Edgemont S D. I still have some pictures of Igloo and some fond memories. Oh yes IT WAS COLD, WINDY AND COLD. VERY COLD

So Gregoire
It looks like its easier for me to continue my geological education in little bite size pieces .....like today's post on the McHenry, IL , Chain O' Lakes etc.
I loved your short discourse on lakes and their beginnings. It's amazing the obvious things (like no natural lakes in the South) that I had blindly missed.

Anyway, you gave a great, simple explanation to that age old question, " Mommy, where do lakes come from?"
Between you and my brother, I may one day become a geo-geek.
Keep on landing
